Agriculture

Paddy cultivation is by far the largest agricultural practice pursued by a major section of the people. The low lying lands are cultivated with paddy and are fit only for this purpose. The major irrigation works in the district are the Peechi, Vazhani, Chalakudy and Cheerakuzhi Projects. The ayacut of Peechi project which is the largest consists of 46,000 acres of cultivable land. In addition, the project supplies 46,000,000 gallons of drinking water per day to Trichur town. The project also effectively controls the peak flows in the Manali river minimizing flood havocs, and ensures sufficient draft for the maintenance of navigation between Trichur town and the backwaters along the coast. The Peechi Dam site is a popular holiday resort as well.

The most important crop of the district is [paddy. Next to paddy, tapioca farms the chief food crop. The coconut palm dominates the garden crops of the district. Among the condiments and spices grow in the district the areca nut is the most important. A large variety of fruit trees are also grown in the district.

Kole lands extent over an area of 1100 hectares partly along Thrissur, Chavakkad and Mukundapuram taluks of Thrissur district.  The tract is bordered by hilly regions in the east, Kanoly Canal on the west,  Muriyad  Kayal on the south and Mullur Kayak on the north.  They lie 0.5 to 2.0 metres below the msl. And are water logged during the major part of the year.  During monsoon months the entire area is covered with fresh water. When the monsoons recede by November, the level of fresh water falls and sea water tends to get in.  The entry of sea water is prevented to a certain extent by the construction of bunds at Enamavu, Mulayam and Kotton Kete.
