As part of the Decentralised Waste Management System, Thrissur Corporation has installed a 8 ton
capacity OWC at Sakthan Nagar mainly to processes vegetable waste generated at the vegetable market. This has been installed way back in 2012 and the plant is working upmost satisfactorily till now .
The organic waste from the market in general contains only raw organic waste. This organic waste is
collected and inspected for contamination like metal, glass, stone, plastic etc. and then brought to the processing plant. This segregated waste is spread on a table for further segregation and then it is transferred to a trolley which will take it to the hydraulic feeder. All extra large pieces of organic waste will be separated and fed into a double shredder. The shredder will chop this into fine pieces and feed into the hydraulic feeder. The hydraulic feeder will feed this waste into the OWC-30. It is mixed, aerated and fluidized and crushed for 10 minutes. Then the container of the OWC is opened and observations are noted. If the crushed material has more moisture content which can be seen by visual observations, then absorbing media like saw dust or coconut pith is added into the container up to 20% of the weight of the waste depending on the moisture content in it. The ordour control powder Sanitreat and cultured bacteria Bioculum is added at the dosage rate of 2 grams each for 1 Kg of waste. The lid of the container is then closed and again the OWC is operated for another 20 minutes. After the completion of these 20 minutes of operation the system will give an audio video indication by a beep sound and light. The lid is then opened and the processed material is observed. If it is turned to granular free flowing material, then the lid is closed and the system is restarted. The bottom valve is opened for draining out the material. The material is ejected on to a conveyor which transports it to the curing crates. These crates are placed on to the curing system for curing the raw compost into organic manure. For maturing and curing the compost the material has to remain in the curing system for a period of 10 days. After curing, the material which has turned into organic manure can be used for application to the plants or any other mode of usage of manure in agriculture. In order to make the granular texture of the material, it is advisable that before using the organic manure from the crates, it should pass through the sifter. This manure can be packed and stored .
